Brown Bag Lecture Topic: The Material Cultures of American Latinxs - August 29th - BLM Office

Albert Gonzalez. Tuesday August 29 at 12 noon BLM office Taos

Albert Gonzalez is Assistant Professor of Anthropology in the Department of Anthropology, Geography, and Environmental Studies at California State University, East Bay. Dr. Gonzalez holds MA degrees in history and anthropology, and earned his PhD in anthropology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He is an historical archaeologist specializing in the nineteenth-century American West and an expert in the excavation and interpretation of Spanish Colonial and Mexican-Era sites. Dr. Gonzalez has participated in community-based, collaborative archaeology projects for ten years, primarily in Taos, New Mexico, but also in Connecticut, California, and South Florida. His current work focuses on the material culture of Latinxs in the United States.

The topic for Albert's Brown Bag on the 29th of Aug.

"From the ruin of a nineteenth-century Southwestern whiskey distillery to the recent proliferation in Florida of cartel-associated Mexican folk saint imagery, the material cultures of American Latinxs are as colorful as they are poorly understood. This talk navigates the rich

multiplicity of those material narratives, weaving a synthesis of archaeological and material culture studies focused on Latinxs in the United States, past and present."

    • Kit Carson Electric - 118 Cruz Alta Rd, Taos

    Date: Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, 7 PM

    Speaker: Alysia Abbott

Topic:  The Pre-Columbian Peopling of the Taos Area: When and How.

Please note date change - a Wednesday, not a Tuesday.

The Pre-Columbian Peopling of the Taos Area: When and How.

It was generally accepted by the earliest archaeologists of the Taos area that the peopling of the Taos Valley in pre-Columbian times was accomplished by the actual movement of people from the Anasazi world, most prominently during the last half of the 11th century.  Research has been taking shape for decades that suggests that one migration was not the primary source of the pre-Columbian population, but instead the prehistory of the Taos area was a series of interactions of people and ideas over many centuries.  How is archaeological research being used to untangle the complicated history of people in the Taos area and what are the challenges?

    Alysia L. Abbott PhD

Alysia holds degrees in Archaeology and in Anthropology from the University of Texas and the University of New Mexico.  She has 30 years of archaeological research experience in New Mexico and the broader Southwestern United States.

Join other TAS members and our speaker for Dinner at 5 PM

Guadalajara Grill South, 1384 Paseo del Pueblo Sur, Taos, across from Ace Hardware.

Arrive between 5:00 and 5:30 PM, place your order at the front, and take your number to the back room.  No reservations needed.

ENCHANTMENT AND EXPLOITATION: the Life and Hard Times of a New Mexico Mountain Range by William deBuys, revised and expanded edition 2015

DESTINATION: We will visit a landscape of ghosts, including the spectacular scenery of the Black Range, the Aldo Leopold Wilderness, and a restricted area of the White Sands Missile Range. When Mexico ceded the southwest to the United States in 1848 the Chiricahua Apache, among them the Warm Springs Apache, struggled heroically to preserve their centuries-old way of life from incursions from miners, ranchers, farmers, as well as the US military sent to protect them. The Warm Springs Apache were ultimately forced onto reservations in Oklahoma, where their descendants live today. We will explore the scenes of this conflict: the ancestral homeland of the Chihende (Red People), or Warm Springs band of the Chiricahua, including visits to a major battlefield site, the Battle of Hembrillo Basin, and the remains of the mining towns and camps that displaced the Apache and then themselves were abandoned.

Deadlines: Please sign up now so that I can send out a notification to participants so that they can start planning carpooling, accommodations, etc.

VERY IMPORTANT: people have to receive security clearances to visit White Sands missile base a month before the site visit so I will be contacting trip participants for this information. Right now we have thirteen people enrolled.

Changes in itinerary: Lay Powell, who did a fantastic job last month guiding us to rock art sites in the Ruidoso/3 Rivers areas, will be joining us to add rock art site visits while we are in Truth or Consequences and in Glenwood.

Accommodations: Oct 16 and 17, instead of Glenwood, we will stay in Silver City and travel to Glenwood. There are very few accommodations, either motel or camping in Glenwood, and Silver City is relatively close by. I will stay at Bear Creek Lodge, in Pinos Altos, just outside of Silver City. Truth or Consequences has oodles of motels with hot springs. If you want to stay at Riverbend, where I stay, DON'T tell them you are with TAS. If you want to stay at Firewater mention Lay Powell's name. People may also camp at Elephant Butte. Las Cruces remains a work in progress. Recommendations appreciated!
