Date: Tuesday, October 11, 2011
Location: Kit Carson Electric - 118 Cruz Alta Rd., Taos
Title: The Old Spanish Trail: Exploration, Trade, Colonization and War
Speaker: Thomas Merlan
Merlan, Michael Marshall and John Roney carried out this project for the Carson National Forest. They wrote a chronology of the Trail and summarized its history in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California. They then studied the segments on the Carson NF in more detail, using existing archeological reports, with some field –truthing, and proposed some corrections to the trail routes as delineated in the federal legislation making the OST a National Historic Trail. They put together a series of 56 maps from c. 1587 to 2001, showing the Trail at each period of its history, as well as maps showing the present routes and proposed corrections. Merlan will review the project, present the historic and modern maps, and discuss their conclusions.
