  • Mata Ortiz, etc.

Car pool to beautiful Chihuahua to visit the Cuarenta Casas cliff dwellings in a canyon north of Madera, the site of Paquime and adjoining museum near Casas Grande, and the great ceramics village of Mata Ortiz.

We will camp the first night at Pancho Villa State Park at Columbus, NM.  Day two we will cross the border and drive to Madera area where we will camp at a nice, developed campground by a lake in the mountains north of Madera.  Day three we will hike into a beautiful canyon to visit Cuarenta Casas. Days 4 and 5 will be spent at the Adobe Inn in Mata Ortiz where we will visit the many talented potters and work our way into a pot buying frenzy (if you've been there before, you know what I'm talking about).

We will visit the great site of Paquime and the wonderful adjacent musem.  We may spend some time in Viejo Casas Grande, and visiting archaeological sites in the area (unexcavated habitation sites and petroglyphs).  We are hoping that the Jaripeo, or rodeo, will take place at the Hacienda San Diego on Columbus Day (Sunday).

We will firm up these plans as we figure out how many people are interested.  If you are interested in this trip, please contact the wrangler, Paul William at Paul_Williams@nm.blm.gov or 751-4710.
